Born in Manchester, Lucy Powell was Manchester’s first female Labour MP and has helped
to blaze a trail for women in politics in the city. She has also been an outspoken champion of
mothers’ employment rights after ‘The Sun’newspaper branded her lazy while she was on
maternity leave.
