GALCHESTER ISSUE ONE

Manifesto

Galchester is a magazine that celebrates the talented women born, or based, in Manchester. It acts as a directory to connect creative women in the growing creative hub that is my hometown and champions the Mancunian women that have been working under (and over) the radar, giving them the platform to inspire others with their achievements.

Manchester has an extremely male identity, from the Hacienda and Sean Ryder, George Best through to Liam Gallagher despite the city’s incredible suffragette and female history. This year marks 100 years since some women gained the right to vote, and this magazine celebrates to the true “worker bees” of Manchester, encouraging women readers to be as self-assured and confident as their male counterparts, and male subscribers to value the
achievements and contributions of their female peers. It gives an insight into how these women got to their current position, so as to inspire young women aged 16-26 to get into the arts.

If you can’t see it, you can’t be it. Women are more likely to achieve their dreams and aspirations when they see other women succeed, and studies have shown that above all, it is lack of confidence that prevents women from achieving senior roles.

Let’s hear it for a new Mancunian way – one that reclaims Manchester for women and the next generation of female creatives.
