Annie Horniman came from a family of tea merchants and in 1908 bought Manchester’s
Gaiety Theatre. She encouraged the work of new writers and playwrights and aimed to bring
them to the working-class people of the region. She was also the member of an occult society
whose practices included astrology and tarot reading.
